Two Great Cover Letter Examples

Two Great Cover Letter Examples Two Great Cover Letter Examples Do you struggle with what to say in your cover letters/emails? In a recent post, I provided a formula for how to write a cover letter. Now I want to show you some real-world examples, so that you can see how you can put the principles into practice. (If you havent read that article, I suggest reading it now as the examples will make more sense). The first letter was written for an administrative assistant, the second for a sales executive, and you will see that each is different in approach. But fundamentally they follow the saatkorn principle which is the one I preach over and over again. You must a) understand the needs and concerns of your target audience, b) identify why you are uniquely qualified to meet those needs and c) make that connection for the employer.Lets look first at the letter written for the administrative assistant. (To see a larger version, click on the image twice).Notice how the letter addresses man y of the common issues facing executive assistants such as the need to work for multiple managers, the need to handle confidential matters and the skills required to organize heavy workloads. Now look at the letter for the sales executive. Here results are what count, and this letter clearly demonstrates that the sender has relevant experience. In fact, rather than describing his skills, this letter focuses on outlining how he solved a specific problem (one that he knows is also plaguing this company). This letter will grab the attention of recipients because it is so carefully targeted, and because it is packed with impressive results. Its all about appealing to specific needsEach of these cover letter examples works because the applicants truly understand the needs of their target audience. Generic cover letters have no impact whatsoever, but you can open doors very effectively by taking the time to craft an email or letter that shows how you can solve specific problems.I hope these letters have inspired you to revisit your own and given you ideas for improvement. Good luck

You have a mora flexible schedule, your classes from the previous semester are still fresh in your mind, and youre preparing yourself for the semester ahead. Dedicate some of your winter break time to crafting a killer resume. If youre not sure what to include in your resume because youve never had a real job, dont worry. As a student, your academic experience can count as professional work experience. Your presentations, papers, and projects can demonstrate your knowledge, strengths, and abilities (or KSAs, as they say in the federal government). Here are a few action steps you can take over break to begin writing a resume that presents your academic experience as professional work experience.Reflect on the semester that just ended. Freewrite for 20 minute s about the major papers and projects you worked on in each of your classes. Which ones stand out to you? Which ones required the most energy? Which ones were the most challenging? Which ones are the most relevant to your professional goals? Which ones did you enjoy doing and why?Read and glean from your freewrite. On a separate sheet of paper, create list of the most relevant, challenging, and significant papers/projects/presentations that came up in your freewrite.Zoom in. For each project in your list, answer the following questionsWhat was the title of your project/paper/presentation?What was the mission, objective, or purpose of the project? What was your role in the project? Were you a researcher? Writer? Presenter? Designer? With whom did you communicate to work on this project? Students? Organizations? Campus resources? People in the community? What major challenges or problems arose during this project? What actions did you take to overcome or work around these challenges? What were the results of this project? Did you create a report? Was your presentation received well and/or recognized in some way? Did you provide recommendations that are now being considered?Edit your writing about each of your projects to paragraphs of about 5-7 sentences.Insert your paragraphs in your Education section of your resume. You might consider using a subheading called Major Papers and Projects. This exercise forces you to find specific examples of the KSAs that you can bring to a job, even if you think that you didnt make any huge accomplishments last semester. You accomplished more than you think you did. But you need to take the time to reflect on your work. Set aside 1-2 hours over break to do some serious reflection and resume writing. Youll feel more confident and organized going into the Spring 2015 semester.Want to learn more about how to craft a strong student resume, especially for opportunities in the federal government? Is It Ever Okay to Burn a Professional Bridge

Is It Ever Okay to Burn a Professional Bridge Although there are many occasions where burning a bridge is probably going to hurt you more than it hurts your employer, there are some situations where it will actually be your best bet or even your only possible course of action.Just what situations would warrant burning a bridge? Here are fiveof them1. You Literally Hate Your JobRobert Tew once said, Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you, or makes you happy. Life is far too short to work in a job that makes you miserable day in and day out. Some might argue that your attitude affects your job, and this is definitely true to a certain extent. However, having to force a positive attitude each day just to cover up the fact that you are miserable is only fooling everyone but yourself. Do yourself a favor and find a job that makes you happy.2. You Dont Believe in the OrganizationIt is absolutely impossible to sincerely pour your heart and soulmusik into work you dont believe in. Maybe you never shared your organizations values, or maybe youve started losing your faith, but whatever the case, its hard to be great when you disagree with your own mission.Just like a relationship, you can grow apart froman employer. You may have shared the organizationsideals and beliefs when you first started, but over time, that may have changed. And guess what? Thats perfectly okay. Accept it and move on.3. You Tried Something New and Hated ItPerhaps you moved from a corporate recruiting role to an agency recruiting role. You thought you would be okay with running a full desk. You thought you would be okay with the external variables that affect your ability to fill a position. You thought, Hey, I have an opportunity to make more money. This is great.Except, you tried it, and you hated it. Or perhaps you found that it just wasnt your cup of tea. Sometimes, we have to make these types of career decisions to find out what wedo or do not want to do for the rest ofour lives.4. Your Work Environment Is ToxicA toxic work environment means more than just hating your job it means you wake up dreading the workplace drama that you will have to deal with each day. You have a boss who constantly micromanages you or belittles you. Your coworkers do not have your back, and they often make the environment borderline hostile through their speech and actions. The toxicity is sucking you in, and you find yourself beginning to feed into it.If this sounds like your life, its definitely time to leave. Why subject yourself to a highly toxic environment?5. Your Position Is in DangerThis is probably the most obvious scenario in which you may have to burn a bridge. Perhaps your organization is going through an acquisition ormerger, your department is downsizing, or you find that you simply dont have enough work to do to keep yourself busy all day.unterstellung are all signs that the existence ofyour posit ion is in question. When it comes to dealing with this situation, its best to jump ship before you are thrown off of the ship. Beat them to the punch. At the end of the day, you have to look out for yourself. If your position is facing potential elimination, you need to make a choice to burn the bridge now or get burned later when the inevitable happens.Kristina Evans isthe director of HR and recruiting for Exactor.

What to Do When a Job Offer Is Withdrawn or Put On Hold

What to Do When a Job Offer Is Withdrawn or Put On HoldWhat to Do When a Job Offer Is Withdrawn or Put On HoldWhat happens when a company decides that they dont need you - after they have already offered you a job? What rights do those whose job offers have been revoked have, what recourse is there, and what happens to a signing bonus or an advance once an offer has been rescinded? How about if you have a job offer, but the employer puts it on hold? It can happen. A company may realize after they have made a job offer that they dont have the budget for a new hire, or the job offer could be put on hold. You may think youre set for your next job. You could have already submitted your leidice to your current employer. What should you do? Options for What to Do if a Job Offer is Rescinded Unfortunately, you dont have many legal rights. Thats why its important to carefullyevaluate the job offer and the company before you accept the offer to try and enaya the offer is going to hold up. If the job offer is conditional, be sure you can meet all the requirements for it becoming permanent. The last thing you want to do is quit your job andperhaps relocate, only to find out you dont have the new job you were counting on. Mimi Moore, Partner in the Chicago office of Bryan Cave LLP, shares her expertise on the steps to take when you have been offered a new job and the offer is rescinded. First of all, its important to be aware that from a legal perspective you dont have many rights. Thats because most states areemployment at will, which means that the company doesnt have to have a reason to terminate your employment. The same logic holds true for prospective employees. There are steps you can take to protect yourself in the eventuality the job offer is withdrawn Ask what the chances are of the job offer being revoked and ask what the company has done when its happened. The companys past track record is a good indicator of what might happen and the company may have a pla n in place.Ask if thejob offer lettercan reflect what the company will do if the job offer is withdrawn. If there is a signing bonus or an advance, ask what will happen to it.Ask if your offer of employment can make it clear that you can keep itif your offer is revoked.Let the employer know that you want to know as soon as possible if your offer is in jeopardy. Most important,Mimi Moore says, is, To be sure that you are comfortable with the job offer and the company you are agreeing to work for. What to Do if You Lose a Job Before You Start Be prepared. Research contingency plans for what you can do if the offer is withdrawn. You may be able to negotiate other options with the company. You may be able to start part-time, work in a different area, or start later. It cant hurt to see what options might be available. The more flexible you are, the better your chances of being able to work it out.Can you get your old job back? If you had a great relationship with your employer there might be a chance to stay on or to get rehired if you have already left. Some employers would be thrilled to have the opportunity to keep a valued employee. Even if youre not sure whether you have a chance, it doesnt hurt to ask. Here are tips for asking for your job back and hopefully getting rehired. What to Do When a Job Offer Is Put on Hold What happens if you get a job offer, but the employer says its on hold? Candidates may or may not be informed about why the offer has been put on hold, but reasons range from unanticipated budget concerns and unexpected restructuring to a change of heart by an incumbent about leaving the firm. What should you do if you are given ajob offer, but then are told it is on hold? First, ask the employer if there is a time frame for determining the status of the job to get an idea about when a decision might be made. During the discussion, let the company representative know that you are very interested in the job and would like to receive cont inued consideration. Towards the end of the time period given by the employer, reach out to your contact at the company. If no timing has been shared, wait about three weeks to follow up. How to Follow Up Your follow up communication should usually be an email unless the employer has suggested a phone call so that you avoid pestering your contact. Your overture can be framed as checking in on the status of the search and should include an affirmative statement regarding your continuing interest. You might consider providing some new information of potential interest such as an additional certification, award or accomplishment. It is common for job seekers who have received some positive indications that they are a preferred candidate to halt their job search activity. Thats not a good idea. You should continue youractive search for other jobsuntil you have a definitive job offer. That way, you wont lose momentum with your search since the job at hand may never materialize.
